Let’s be honest: in Madrid, the search for the perfect Spanish tortilla is practically an art form. Whether you like it runny and creamy, traditional, or packed with creative ingredients that completely blow your mind, there’s no shortage of incredible options.

That’s why we put together this north-to-south route so you can try some of the city's best tortilla spots without wasting time zigzagging all over Madrid.

Interactive Map

To make things easier, we've mapped out all five stops in order so you can follow the route, compare each tortilla, and decide for yourself which one deserves the crown.

📍 Stop 1: Casa Dani

The Queen of Creamy Tortillas (Salamanca District)

We’re kicking things off in Salamanca. This place is a true Madrid classic and has won several prestigious national awards over the years. Their signature tortilla is incredibly creamy and almost molten in the center, the kind that practically melts on your plate.

  • Options: You can order it with or without onions, depending on your preference.

  • Insider tip: They also serve their famous Paisana tortilla, made with chorizo and bacon. Just keep in mind that this version is only available as a whole tortilla, not by the slice.

  • Price: Around €5.00 per slice.

  • Where: Calle de Ayala 28 (inside Mercado de la Paz).

  • TIP: Try to arrive early or be prepared to wait, it’s usually packed.

📍 Stop 2: Bodega La Ardosa

The Essence of a Classic Madrid Tavern (Malasaña)

From Salamanca, we head down to Malasaña. If you want a taste of Madrid’s living history, this stop is a must. It’s a historic tavern dating back to the late 19th century, with an incredible wooden bar and all the charm of an old-school Spanish bodega.

The perfect plan here? Order a slice of tortilla, pair it with a perfectly poured draft beer, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.

  • Specialty: Their classic onion tortilla. Perfectly cooked, simple, and packed with flavor—the kind of comfort food that instantly makes you feel at home.

  • Price: €3.70.

  • Where: Calle de Colón 13.

📍 Stop 3: La Primera

Fine Dining Meets Tortilla on Gran Vía (City Center)

Next, we make our way to Madrid’s most iconic avenue. The vibe changes completely here. La Primera is an elegant, upscale restaurant with a beautiful design and a much more refined dining experience.

The location is unbeatable, and their tortilla stands out for its silky texture and high-quality ingredients.

  • Notable varieties: Besides the classic version, you can order it with additions like bacon, Iberian ham, or turkey.

  • Price: €6.00 (the most expensive stop on the list, but justified by both the setting and the execution).

  • Where: Gran Vía 1.

📍 Stop 4: Alto Bardero

A Neighborhood Restaurant with Exceptional Quality (La Latina)

Now we head into La Latina. Unlike many of the quick tapas bars you'll find in the area, Alto Bardero focuses on high-quality ingredients and a carefully crafted dining experience.

This is actually one of our personal favorites, you absolutely have to try it!

  • Specialty: Tortilla with caramelized onions. The subtle sweetness adds a completely different dimension and gives it a unique personality.

  • Price: €5.00.

  • Where: Plaza de la Puerta de Moros 4.

📍 Stop 5: Pez Tortilla

Creative and Innovative Tortillas on the Go (La Latina / Cava Baja)

We finish the route on the famous Cava Baja street. This place is the exact opposite of a formal restaurant: modern, lively, casual, and designed for a quick stop.

You walk in, grab a creative tortilla slice, order a craft beer, and keep exploring the city. Perfect if you're looking for something a little different.

Signature Tortillas

  • The classic potato tortilla.

  • Potato tortilla with wild asparagus and shimeji mushrooms (a surprisingly great gourmet twist).

  • Potato tortilla with blood sausage.

  • Sun-dried tomato, Parmesan, and basil.

  • Brie, truffle, and ham (their most popular option).

Price: Between €4.00 and €5.00 per slice.

Where: Calle de la Cava Baja 42.

Keep in mind they also have locations at Calle de Pez 36 and Calle de Espoz y Mina 13 if those fit better into your plans.
