Spending New Year’s Eve in Paris means celebrating right in front of the Arc de Triomphe, one of the most iconic places in the city.
Spending New Year’s Eve in Paris is a very special experience, as thousands of people gather in front of one of the most famous monuments in the world to welcome the new year.
📍 Where New Year’s Eve is celebrated in Paris
The main event takes place on the Champs-Élysées Avenue, right in front of the Arc de Triomphe.
It’s important to know that this is not a traditional fireworks show like in other cities. It’s more of a light, projection, and music show on the Arc, combined with the countdown.
Still, the atmosphere is incredible, and people from all over the world come together to celebrate.
Important tips for New Year’s Eve in Paris
🟠 Arrive early: If you want a decent spot, arriving early is key.
• Before 7:00 PM → better chance of getting a good view
• After 9:00 PM → expect big crowds and limited movement
Many people stay there for hours, so bring patience (and something to snack on).
🟠 Public transport: Even though it’s free on New Year’s Eve, some stations are closed for safety reasons.
Public transport is free from 5:00 PM on December 31st until 12:00 PM on January 1st.
The metro lines that run all night are: 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 14.
❗ Closed stations: For safety reasons, stations like George V, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Champs-Élysées – Clémenceau, Concorde, and Tuileries are usually closed. You’ll need to walk a bit more to get in and out of the area.
🟠 Uber and taxis: If you’re lucky, you might find one after midnight, but prices are extremely high and demand is crazy.
🟠 Dress warm: It’s winter, it gets very cold, and you’ll be standing outside for quite a while waiting for midnight.
🟠 Food and drinks: Many places close early, and the ones that stay open are packed. It’s better to buy something beforehand or have a reservation. Also, keep in mind that in some areas drinking alcohol in public is not allowed.
🟠 Safety: There’s a strong police presence and security checks. We recommend bringing only what you need, keeping an eye on your bags, and setting a meeting point with your group in case you get separated in the crowd.
Our experience spending New Year’s Eve in Paris
Honestly… did we think it was a great idea? Yes. Was it chaotic? Also yes 😅.
We were a group of around 20 people (grandparents, uncles, siblings, different ages) and we stayed in an Airbnb quite far from the center.
What we didn’t take into account was the worst combination: traffic, huge crowds, and impossible Uber demand.
Since the streets were packed with cars and people, the Uber had to constantly take alternative routes, and everything took forever.
Lesson learned: Keep traffic in mind and go early, because otherwise… you might end up spending New Year’s Eve inside an Uber. 😂
Is it worth spending New Year’s Eve in Paris?
If you have the chance and feel like living this experience, go for it.
The setting makes the moment unforgettable: being in front of the Arc de Triomphe, surrounded by people from all over the world, waiting for midnight… it’s something you won’t forget.
That said, we also believe there’s nothing better than starting the year in a calm way, with people you care about, without all the chaos.
So in the end, it depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for: something massive and lively, or something more intimate and relaxed.
Paris gives you both options, it’s just about choosing what fits you best.
