Driving along Australia’s East Coast is a classic experience for anyone traveling through the country. Many people rent a car or a campervan and start a road trip along the ocean, stopping at beaches, coastal towns, and cities that appear one after another along the road.
One of the best things about this region is that there are destinations for every type of traveler. Some places work really well as a base for living for a while, like the Gold Coast, which is a fairly large city compared to other stops. Others are perfect for weekend getaways or short stops during the journey.
That’s exactly what we did during our time in Australia. We were based in Mackay, QLD, for quite a while, using it as a starting point to explore many nearby destinations. We also completed part of the classic East Coast route, traveling from Sydney to Cairns and passing through beaches, national parks, and coastal towns along the way.
