Getting Around Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is small and easy to explore, especially if you stay near the center.

Having a car is always helpful, but it’s not strictly necessary.

Where to Stay in Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach has accommodation for every type of traveler, from hostels and camping to hotels and apartments.

We chose a budget option, since we were traveling with camping gear. But if you’re looking for more comfort, these are some great alternatives.

Budget Options

One of the best options is Nomads Airlie Beach, where we stayed.

It’s located right in the center and offers:

  • Shared dorms

  • Private rooms

  • A camping area for tents and motorhomes

All guests can also use the shared kitchen, which is well equipped.

Another great thing is that it’s a very social place, ideal if you’re traveling solo or with friends.

🏕️ Camping

If you’re traveling in a van, motorhome, or with a tent, Airlie Beach is a fantastic base for camping.

Many campgrounds include bathrooms, showers, kitchens, and electricity, making it a practical and affordable option.

Two great camping options are:

  • Discovery Parks - Airlie Beach: Probably the most famous and complete campground in the area. It’s surrounded by rainforest, and it’s common to see kangaroos and colorful parrots around. It has a great pool with slides, a large communal kitchen, and excellent facilities.

  • NRMA Airlie Beach Holiday Park: This one has the best location if you want to move around on foot. It’s right next to the town center and the famous Airlie Beach Lagoon.

Hotels (More Comfort)

If your budget allows and you prefer a comfortable bed and great views, Airlie Beach has some fantastic options.

  • Airlie Beach Hotel: A classic in town. It’s located right in front of the ocean and in the center, so the best bars and the marina are just steps away.

  • Sea Star Apartments: If you prefer more independence, these modern apartments are very well equipped. The highlight is the ocean view balconies and the beautiful pool.

🏡 Airbnb

If you’re traveling in a group, Airbnb can be one of the most convenient options.

You can often rent entire houses or apartments for less than the price of a hotel room, and you’ll have your own kitchen.

A good option is:

  • Bush Village Holiday Cabins: Cabins of different sizes with a pool and BBQ areas. It’s located just a few minutes from the center of Airlie Beach and close to supermarkets and the marina, great for traveling with friends.

Things to Do in Airlie Beach

Although the main reason people visit is to explore the Whitsundays, there are still a few things worth doing in town.

✔️Walk Around the Town Center

The town center is small but very lively. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, bars, and surf-style shops.

It’s the perfect place for an evening walk after a day exploring the islands.

Recommended Cafés and Bars

  • Cafe Le Shack: A charming café where you’ll find great coffee and pastries, and even some Argentinian products like empanadas, yerba mate, and dulce de leche.

  • Nomads Bar: Located next to the Nomads hostel. They offer food, drinks, happy hour deals, and live music events during the week.

✔️Visit the Weekend Markets

Every Saturday you can enjoy open-air markets by the beach, a great place to walk around and discover local products.

✔️ Spend the Day at the Airlie Beach Lagoon

This large public lagoon in the town center is a safe place to swim and cool off during the months when swimming in the ocean can be risky due to jellyfish (usually from November to May).

It’s completely free and open all year.

Opening hours:

☀️ Summer (September – May): 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM

❄️ Winter (June – August): 5:30 AM – 7:00 PM

The Whitsundays

What are the Whitsundays?

The Whitsundays are a group of more than 70 islands located within the Great Barrier Reef, famous for their white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and untouched landscapes.

They are the main attraction of Airlie Beach, and for many travelers they’re among the most beautiful beaches in the world.

All ferries and tours to the islands depart from Airlie Beach.

🌊 WHITEHAVEN BEACH:

Whitehaven Beach is the most famous beach in the Whitsundays, and one of the most incredible places we visited in Australia.

Here you’ll find:

  • Untouched nature: Since it’s part of a National Park, there are no hotels, restaurants, or buildings.

  • Pure white sand and crystal-clear water: Perfect for walking along the beach and taking incredible photos.

  • Panoramic viewpoints: Don’t miss the famous Hill Inlet Lookout.

  • Camping area: For adventurous travelers, it’s even possible to camp on the island.

⛺ Camping on Whitehaven Beach

We decided to stay overnight on the island, and it was one of the best experiences of our trip.

How it works:

  • Book a ferry from Airlie Beach

  • Reserve a camping spot on the island

  • The ferry drops you off and picks you up after the number of nights you choose

Approximate prices:

  • Camping: 7.90 AUD per night

  • Ferry: around 200 AUD per person (round trip)

⚠️ This island is extremely popular, so camping spots sell out quickly, booking in advance is essential.

There are no kitchens or supermarkets on the island, so you’ll need to bring:

  • Food

  • Cooking equipment

  • Camping gear

Many ferry companies offer camping equipment rentals.

Things to Do in Whitehaven

Besides relaxing on the beach, there are several activities to enjoy:

  1. Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef: Explore colorful coral and marine life.

  2. Kayaking and Paddleboarding: A great way to explore the bays at your own pace. Equipment usually costs around 25 AUD per hour.

  3. Panoramic Lookouts: Two short hikes lead to incredible viewpoints overlooking the beach and turquoise water.

🚤 Day Tours to the Whitsundays

If camping isn’t really your thing and you prefer comfort, day tours are the perfect option.

They’re very complete and usually include:

  • Boat transportation (speedboat or sailing boat)

  • Lunch on board or a beach picnic

  • Snorkeling equipment and stinger suits for jellyfish protection

  • Expert guides who explain everything about the area

A standard full-day tour from Airlie Beach usually costs between 180 AUD (€109.80) and 220 AUD (€134.20) per person.

It’s the perfect option if you don’t have much time or simply don’t want to carry camping gear around.

 🌊HAMILTON ISLAND:

If you’re looking for a premium experience, Hamilton Island is the most glamorous side of the Whitsundays. Unlike Whitehaven, here you’ll find incredible infrastructure with hotels, resorts, restaurants, and luxury shops. It even has its own airport with direct flights from major Australian cities.

What to Do on the Island: Hiking and Views

It’s not all about relaxing by the pool, Hamilton Island also has some amazing hiking trails if you want to explore a bit.

  • Hideaway Bay: A hidden beach that’s peaceful and beautiful. It’s a moderate hike of about 2 km (45 minutes).

  • Passage Peak: This is the highest point on the island. From the top you get a 360° view of the Whitsundays islands, which is absolutely incredible. The hike is 2.7 km (about 1 hour) with a moderate incline.

Where to Stay: Next-Level Options

Hamilton Island is definitely expensive (we won’t lie) but if you want to treat yourself, these options are amazing.

Reef View Hotel: A 4-star hotel with everything: breakfast, gym, spa, sauna, and free airport transfers.

Approximate price: 420 AUD (€256.20) per night for two people.

Hamilton Holiday Homes: These apartments are ideal for groups or families since they include a full kitchen. The best part: they include a golf buggy so you can move around the island easily 🛺.

Approximate price: 550 AUD (€335.50) per night (entire apartment).

When to Visit Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays

Planning the right timing can make a big difference for your trip. Even though it’s a tropical destination that you can visit year-round, there’s a period that’s clearly the best.

🪼 The best time to visit is between April and November

  • Better weather: You’ll find sunny days and very pleasant temperatures, not too cold and without the intense summer heat.

  • Less rain: It’s the dry season, which means clearer skies and that beautiful turquoise water the islands are famous for.

  • Fewer jellyfish: Outside these months it’s stinger season. Traveling between April and November greatly reduces the chances of encountering dangerous jellyfish.

Tips Before Visiting Airlie Beach & The Whitsundays

  • Book tours in advance, especially in high season

  • Be aware of stinger season (Nov–May), wear protection when swimming

  • Bring sun protection, the UV index is very high

  • If you want fewer crowds, consider overnight trips instead of day tours

  • Ferries and tours depart from the marina, plan your schedule accordingly

Our Experience in Airlie Beach & Whitsundays

We definitely recommend visiting Airlie Beach, but what truly makes this destination special are the Whitsundays.

Airlie itself is small and can be explored in 1–2 days, but the islands are something else entirely. The landscapes, the colors of the water, and the untouched beaches make it one of the most memorable places we visited in Australia.

If you’re planning your trip, make sure to include at least one island experience, whether it’s a day tour or an overnight stay.
