K’gari, also known as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world and is located off the east coast of Queensland, Australia. The mix of sand dunes, tropical rainforest, and freshwater lakes makes it one of the most unique places in the country.
We visited from Noosa, and in this K’gari (Fraser Island) guide, we share how to get there, what to see, where to stay, and whether a tour or a 4x4 adventure is the best option for your trip.

📍 How to Get to K’gari (Fraser Island)
Best Way to Visit Fraser Island
Since the island is entirely made of sand, you can only explore it with a 4x4 vehicle. This means your experience will depend on whether you choose a guided tour or a self-drive 4x4 adventure.
Guided Tour (the easiest option)
We did a full-day tour (9 hours) that included:
Pick-up in Rainbow Beach + round-trip ferry
National Park entrance fee
Lunch and drinks on the 4x4 truck
A guide who takes you to the best spots on the island
It’s a very convenient and complete option, although you don’t have full control over your schedule.
Approximate price: 280 AUD
Renting a 4x4 (more freedom)
If you prefer to create your own itinerary and move at your own pace, this is definitely the best option. It allows you to explore more remote areas of the island.
How does it work?
From Noosa, you drive to Rainbow Beach and take the ferry with your vehicle. Keep in mind:
Costs: Renting a good 4x4 starts at around 500 AUD (€305), plus fuel and the national park permit.
Experience required: It’s ideal if you’re traveling with friends to split costs, but you need to know how to drive on sand and off-road. If you get stuck, towing services on the island can be very expensive.
🏠 Where to Stay
🛏️ In Noosa

We stayed at:
This place is amazing if you’re looking for a real Australian experience. It’s located next to a lake, and the best part is that there are kangaroos freely walking around the property.
It has a full kitchen, BBQ areas, and you can choose between camping or staying in rooms.
It’s about 15 minutes from the center, but totally worth it.
Another great option if you want to stay closer to town:
Bounce Noosa – Very well located, close to the beach and the town center. It’s modern, has an amazing pool, and a great social vibe.
🏝️ In Fraser Island
Accommodation on the island is pretty limited. Camping is the main option, with only a couple of resorts if you’re looking for more comfort.
⛺ Camping (the full experience)
There are more than 45 camping areas across the island. Some are very basic, while others have facilities like bathrooms, showers, and fire pits.
These are our top picks:
Dundubara: right by the ocean, with showers and fire pits. Perfect for sleeping with the sound of the waves.
Dilli Village: one of the most modern options, with electricity and even some cabins.
Lake McKenzie: very basic, but you’ll be camping next to one of the most beautiful spots on the island.
IMPORTANT
You need a camping permit, often included in tours or bookings
All campsites require advance reservation, especially in high season
Hotels:
If camping isn’t your thing, there are only two hotels on the island, both offering restaurants, bars, and pools.
K’gari Beach Resort: Located on the east coast, right on 75 Mile Beach. Perfect if you want to stay close to iconic spots like the Maheno shipwreck.
Approximate price: 280 AUD per night (double room)
Kingfisher Bay Resort: Located on the west coast, this is the largest and most luxurious resort on the island. It’s known for its incredible sunsets and full-service experience.
Approximate price: from 320 AUD per night
Most resorts don’t just offer rooms — you’ll also find full apartments and cabins, which are perfect for families or larger groups.
🌊 Top Things to Do in K’gari (Fraser Island)

Visit Lake McKenzie
One of the most famous lakes in Australia, with crystal-clear water and pure white sand.
We went on a cloudy day, but we still really enjoyed it. The water was calm, warm, and super relaxing.
Our guide told us the sand works as a natural exfoliant, leaving your skin super soft 🙈
Explore the SS Maheno Shipwreck
An old ship that got stranded on 75 Mile Beach after a cyclone in 1935. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the island.

Swim at the Champagne Pools
Natural pools formed by volcanic rocks. They’re called “Champagne” because when waves crash, the water bubbles like champagne.
It’s one of the safest places to swim, since the open ocean can have sharks and jellyfish depending on the season.
Go Hiking

The island has trails for all levels. We recommend the Valley of the Giants walk. It’s an easy hike that takes around 1 to 1.5 hours (2.6 km), where you’ll see massive ancient trees.
It’s only accessible on foot, and the sense of peace there is unreal.
🐕 Dingoes
You might see them, but you cannot interact with them. They are wild animals.
And what about Noosa?
Even though we didn’t spend much time in Noosa and didn’t get to fully explore it, we did have the chance to visit Noosa National Park, which is very close to the town center.
It’s an amazing coastal walk, with easy trails, ocean views, and natural rock pools that are perfect for cooling off along the way. We felt like it was the perfect addition to combine with Fraser Island, and a great reason to include at least one night in Noosa in your itinerary.

Tips Before Visiting K’gari (Fraser Island)
You’ll need a 4x4 to explore the island: it’s entirely made of sand, so regular cars won’t work
Always check tide times: if you’re driving some areas like 75 Mile Beach depend on it
Book everything in advance: tours, ferries and permits can fill up quickly
Fuel and supplies are limited (and pricey) once you’re on the island, so plan ahead
Camping requires permits and reservations, especially in high season
Respect the wildlife: dingoes are common and should never be approached
Bring sun protection and water: there’s very little shade in many areas
Is a Day Trip to Fraser Island Enough?
It’s definitely possible to visit K’gari on a day trip, and it’s a great option if you’re short on time.
You’ll get to see the main highlights like Lake McKenzie and the Maheno Shipwreck, and everything is very well organized. That said, it can feel a bit rushed.
If you have the time, staying at least one night makes a big difference. You’ll be able to explore at a slower pace, enjoy quieter moments, and experience the island beyond just the main stops.
For us, the day tour was amazing, but if we went back, we’d definitely stay longer.
Our Experience
We visited Fraser Island on a day tour, and honestly, it was an incredible experience. Everything is so well organized that you really make the most of your time and get to see the island’s highlights without worrying about logistics.
If we could do it again, we’d definitely stay at least one night, either camping or in one of the resorts, to experience the island at a slower pace and enjoy places like Lake McKenzie without the time pressure.
Being able to watch the sunset on the beach and start the next day without rushing would make a huge difference.
It’s easily one of the most unique stops along Australia’s east coast, and we 100% recommend adding it to your itinerary. It’s one of those places that truly makes you feel like you’re at the edge of the world.
