Where Jervis Bay Is and How to Get There

Jervis Bay is located on the south coast of New South Wales, about 2.5 hours by car south of Sydney.

We believe the best option is to rent a car ,whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, because of the freedom and convenience it gives you. However, there are also several public and private transport options to reach this beautiful region.

Transportation options from Sydney

Where to Stay in Jervis Bay

Australia is incredibly well prepared for camping. Most Aussies have their own tent, sleeping bag, and camping gear. In fact, buying camping equipment was one of the first things we did when we arrived in Australia.

That’s why the first thing we recommend in Jervis Bay is camping.

It’s a beautiful, natural experience and also much more affordable.

We stayed one night and two days exploring the area, and it was the perfect weekend beach getaway.

⛺️ Campings

  • Jervis Bay Cabins & Camping (where we stayed)

    This campground offers different options:

    • Camping sites without electricity

    • Powered camping sites

    • Cabins

We loved it. It has BBQ areas, fire pits, bathrooms, and showers, and the location is great.

❗ Important: arrive within check-in hours, otherwise you may not be able to enter.

  • Green Patch Camping (Booderee National Park)

    Another highly recommended campground.

It’s surrounded by nature and has direct access to the beach. Perfect if you’re looking for something quieter and more wild.

Hotels and Apartments

In this region you’ll find several small towns, each with its own vibe. If you prefer comfort and having everything nearby, these are the best areas to base yourself.

🔹 Huskisson

This is the heart of Jervis Bay, with restaurants, cafés, and a lively atmosphere. Most hotels and apartments are located here.

Recommended option:

  • Jervis Bay Holiday Park: Offers cabins, villas, and even glamping with private bathrooms, depending on your budget.

🔹Vincentia

A much quieter and more residential area located close to Hyams Beach, the beach famous for having some of the whitest sand in the world. Perfect if you’re looking for peace and easy access to the best beaches.

Recommended option:

  • Dolphin Shores: Located 5 minutes from Jervis Bay National Park and about 10 minutes from Hyams Beach. Offers private rooms and full apartments for groups.

How to Get Around Jervis Bay

The easiest way to get around Jervis Bay is by car 🚗. Some distances between beaches and accommodation areas can be quite long, especially if you stay at a campground or outside the town center.

There is public transportation, but schedules are limited and routes are often longer.

For example, a trip that takes 15 minutes by car can take over an hour by bus.

Uber is also available, but availability varies and prices are not always cheap in this area.

Conclusion

If you can rent a car, your trip will be much easier and more efficient.

Fall in Love with Bioluminescence

This is without a doubt one of the most magical phenomena in Jervis Bay. The water lights up with a glowing blue color when it moves, creating a natural spectacle that feels almost unreal.

📍 Best beaches to see it

  • Hyams Beach

  • Plantation Point

  • Callala Bay

It doesn’t happen every night, but to increase your chances:

  • Go on a dark night (no moon)

  • Best season: February to April

Where to Eat

We only spent one weekend in Jervis Bay and stayed at a campground, so we made the most of the free BBQ areas to cook our own food and had leftovers for breakfast the next morning 😂. It’s one of the best ways to save money and enjoy nature at the same time.

However, if you feel like sitting down and eating out, the town center of Huskisson has great options.

  • 5 Little Pigs Café – A local favorite, perfect for a great breakfast or brunch before heading to the beach.

  • Albert N Miso Café – If you’re looking for excellent coffee and great food with a view of the bay, this is the place. The location is perfect to start the day.

And one thing that never disappoints in Australia: Specialty coffee

Tips Before Visiting Jervis Bay

  • Renting a car is highly recommended, public transport is limited

  • Book accommodation early in high season, especially campsites

  • Check conditions before swimming, some beaches can have strong currents

  • Whale season runs from May to November

  • Bioluminescence is unpredictable, go on dark nights for better chances

  • Bring sun protection, UV levels are very high in Australia

Our Experience

This was one of our first trips after arriving in Sydney, and even though there are incredible beaches close to the city, Jervis Bay completely blew us away.

The landscapes feel totally different, and without exaggeration, some of the beaches here are among the best you’ll see in all of New South Wales.

The combination of almost unreal white sand, crystal-clear water, and wild nature (with kangaroos included) makes it a destination we recommend without hesitation.

For us, it’s the perfect weekend getaway and a place we would return to again and again.
