Choosing where to stay in Lombok is key to making the most of your trip, especially because distances across the island are long.
Before booking, it’s important to decide whether you want to stay in the north or the south of the island, since traveling between them isn’t very practical.
We actually had a FULL CHECKLIST of plans for the SOUTH (where most travelers go), but when we arrived in Lombok, we realized our accommodation was in the NORTH!
The upside? We discovered places we hadn’t even planned to visit and had to completely rearrange our itinerary… but in the end, it turned out to be a great surprise. 😄
Of course, we weren’t going to skip the south, but riding a scooter from north to south takes about 3 hours — not something we’d recommend doing several days in a row.
North or South Lombok: Which Area Should You Choose?
Why Choose North Lombok?
North Lombok is the most natural and authentic part of the island.
Here you’ll find:
• Jungle, mountains, and traditional villages
• Mount Rinjani, one of Indonesia’s most important volcanoes
• Famous waterfalls like Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep
It’s a very peaceful area, ideal if you’re looking for trekking, untouched nature, and real connection with local culture.
It’s also the smartest option if your plan includes visiting the Gili Islands (you can read our complete guide to the Gili Islands here!). Since the north sits directly across from them, transfers are much shorter, faster, and cheaper than from anywhere else on the island.
Where to Stay in North Lombok
⭐️ Villa Cocodome (our choice)
• Perfect for couples
• Super romantic white-architecture bungalows
• Incredible views and private pool (only in a few units)
• 24/7 service and thoughtful details, like fresh coconuts when you arrive
We stayed here and would honestly go back a thousand times.
It was one of the best accommodations of our entire trip.
Why Choose South Lombok?
South Lombok, especially the Kuta Lombok area, is ideal if your trip revolves more around beaches and surfing.
Here you’ll find:
• White-sand bays with turquoise water like Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, and Mawi
• Beaches perfect for both beginner and advanced surfers
• More cafés, hotels, bars and a traveler vibe
It’s the perfect area to relax, enjoy the ocean, and do water activities — with more energy and movement than the north.
We recommend staying at Nucifera Kuta Lombok (highly rated, especially for its excellent location and service).

Final Thoughts: North or South?
Lombok is an island of contrasts, and choosing between north and south depends entirely on the kind of trip you’re looking for.
If you’re into surf culture, cliffside sunsets, and a younger vibe with modern cafés, Kuta is your spot. It’s the perfect base for exploring the wild beaches of the south and enjoying a more active atmosphere.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, ocean sunsets, and easy access to the Gili Islands, Senggigi offers a slower rhythm, with better access to northern waterfalls and Mount Rinjani.
Our recommendation? If you have the time, don’t choose — do both!
They’re two completely different sides of the same island. The ideal plan is to split your nights between them: experience the energy of Kuta and end your trip with the calm of Senggigi. Having both perspectives will show you why Lombok is truly Indonesia’s authentic hidden gem.
